I offer individual and family therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. I have evening availability.

Psychological treatment has many names, such as psychotherapy, therapy, and counselling. I provide therapy from a mainly cognitive behavioral theoretical perspective, with a blend of humanism and mindfulness. This approach helps people to develop a deeper understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Together we explore the events and beliefs that shape them. This awareness fosters more personal acceptance, as well as increased conscious influence over their emotional and social functioning.

Therapy typically involves a first session in which you identify your primary concerns. We then engage in a process of setting goals for the treatment. I spend some time getting to know you and your history, as it is relevant to your stated concerns and goals. You will not likely leave your first session having all of your concerns solved. However, you should leave with a sense of what can be achieved in therapy, and if my style is a good fit for your needs. The length of treatment depends on your expressed concerns. This can be discussed during the first session. Sessions are typically for 50 minutes, once per week.

Common areas of treatment focus include:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviours/rituals
  • Trauma
  • Family conflict
  • Low self-esteem
  • Depression
  • Barriers to achievement in school
  • Anger management
  • Stress and conflict related to gender role/expectations

In addition to therapy, I provide consultation for people who would benefit from guidance from a mental health professional. Consultation differs from therapy in that the goal is to help you find solutions to current problems or to help you connect with other services that you might find helpful. This may occur over one or more sessions. Some topics for which I consult include:

  • Parenting and family dynamics
  • How to apply assessment accommodations in a school, work, or home setting
  • Strategies for coping with bereavement
  • Methods to support a loved one

If you are seeking a low-cost option for therapy for your child, you may locate a CMHO centre in your area here.
